Opinion: Crimes like genocide of Belarusians by Nazis should never repeat

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – Crimes similar to the genocide of Belarusian people and the extermination of representatives of certain ethnic and social groups by the Nazis should not happen again, Igor Gedich, a member of the Council of the Republic, Director of the Grodno Regional Drama Theater, told BelTA.

“22 June is a terrible date in the history of our state. On this day the genocide of Belarusian people began. Millions of innocent people found themselves hostages to political ambitions to conquer territories in Eastern Europe. Belarusians were subjected to inhumane extermination by representatives of the so-called superior race. A monstrous and striking document - Generalplan Ost - provided for extermination and forced relocation of up to 85% of the population of Belarus, total destruction of our cities and villages. We remember Khatyn and Selets, we remember Zalesye and Shaulichi and more than 9,000 settlements destroyed and burned together with children, women and the elderly,” the senator said.

According to Igor Gedich, our main task is to preserve the historical truth about those terrible but heroic years and to pass it on to the younger generation.

“Paying tribute to our past, we must look into the future. Crimes like the genocide of Belarusian people, the murder of representatives of certain ethnic and social groups by the Nazis should not be repeated. This is our common duty and, without exaggeration, the most important and urgent task for the entire international community, especially in today's conditions, when there are attempts to split the society and rewrite history to please some ‘new race',” the senator concluded.
