Opinion: Belarusian People's Congress will help address burning issues

MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) – The Belarusian People's Congress will become an important tool to address urgent issues, Ph.D. in History, Dean of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Faculty of Belarusian State University Vadim Gigin told the ONT TV channel, BelTA informs.

“You shouldn't expect that the congress will resolve all the issues. It does not have such powers, and no one sets such a task. We should not cherish such high expectations. However, we must make a clear statement that this will be an important milestone (and we see it by the public and media response) in resolving long-standing problems,” Vadim Gigin said.

At the same time, the previous years showed that not all decisions made at the Belarusian People's Congress are implemented, Vadim Gigin said. The historian believes that this cannot be done 100%, since many of these decisions are landmarks to strive for. However, Vadim Gigin is convinced that the Belarusian People's Congress delegates should nevertheless work out a certain mechanism for implementing decisions so that all the goals are achieved.

The expert also responded to criticism that only supporters of the current constitutional order will take part in the congress. However, this does not mean that they all have the same view of social, political and economic issues.

The Belarusian People's Congress was preceded by dialogue platforms organized in various cities and institutions. There was a heated debate, the expert noted. “Some push for a parliamentary republic, others advocate a presidential one. Different people want different economic models. Hundreds of delegates (I'm watching how the nomination is going on) are now having real discussions, debate,” Vadim Gigin said.
