GOMEL, 12 November (BelTA) – Belarus is the only country in the post-Soviet space that has managed to increase its forest cover and expand its forest area since gaining independence, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Karanik said during the international scientific conference on functioning of forest ecosystems in modern conditions, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the NASB Forest Institute, BelTA has learned.
As the head of the NASB emphasized, over the 95-year history, the institute has experienced many events together with the country – both bright and tragic. “These include the tragedy of the Great Patriotic War, when some of the workers defended their native land with weapons in their hands, the years of evacuation, and then the restoration of the material and technical base, the restoration of forests, which were also severely affected during the war,” Vladimir Karanik noted.
“Belarus’ independence ushered in a new phase of development for the institute, characterized by a stronger material and technical base and new research vectors. In every instance, when facing the challenges of the era, the institute’s staff has shown great dedication to their cause and a steadfast desire to advance and evolve,” the chairman of the NASB Presidium added.
He stated that a great deal had indeed been accomplished. “Belarus is the only country in the post-Soviet space that has managed to increase its forest cover and expand its forest area since gaining independence. Since rational forest management, reforestation, and forest protection are state priorities, mandated by the president and implemented by all government agencies. The staff of the Forest Institute provides the necessary scientific and methodological support for this work,” the head of the NASB pointed out.
“We are fully aware of our responsibility to the future generation. A wise man once said: we do not inherit this land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. And I am sure that through joint efforts we will pass on our Belarus to the next generations even more beautiful,” he emphasized.
Vladimir Karanik noted the unique blend of youth and experience at the Forest Institute. “There are experienced workers who are still in service and pass on their knowledge, there are young people working with passion, eager to move forward. And this blend of youth and experience will ensure the further development of the institution. While we honor the path traveled and past glories, the finest achievements of the NASB Forest Institute are yet to come,” he believes.
