MP: Reunification of Western Belarus and BSSR bears great historical significance

MINSK, 29 April (BelTA) – The reunification of Western Belarus and the BSSR is of great historical significance, Sergei Syrankov, a member of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives, said as he addressed the parliamentary hearings “Territorial integrity and people's unity of Belarus. Historical and legal aspects of reunification of Western Belarus and the BSSR”, BelTA has learned.

“The unification of Western Belarus with the BSSR is of great historical significance. Belarusians received and used a historic opportunity to live together, to defend their interests, to build their lives as a family. The process of territorial, ethnographic consolidation of the Belarusian nation was completed,” Sergei Syrankov noted.

According to him, the present and future generations of Belarusians must know and cherish the memory of the long heroic struggle of the Belarusian people for their national dignity, for the right to be a respected nation. “Holding a number of events to mark 17 September in the Year of People's Unity as well as conducting these parliamentary hearings today are important in terms of the analysis of both the historical past and modern social and political processes,” the MP said. “Today we must convey the truth about the whole chain of historical events that preceded the reunification of Belarusians into one state to the general public, first of all our young people who are now being targeted by various political forces."

The parliamentary hearings are set to discuss international and geopolitical outcomes of the reunification of the Belarusian nation, the history and modern state of affairs of the Belarusian-Polish relations, ways to formalize government's activities to preserve the historical heritage, and other matters.

Taking part in the hearings are representatives of the Justice Ministry, the Academy of Public Administration under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research, the Belarusian Research Institute of Records Management and Archival Studies, scientific organizations, and higher education institutions.
