More than 140,000 people cross Belarusian border since new year

MINSK, 3 January (BelTA) – More than 140,000 people, among which 70% are Russians, have crossed the Belarusian border since the beginning of the year, BelTA has learned from the website of the State Border Committee of Belarus.

Just as expected, during the New Year celebrations the traffic flow across the state border fluctuated. The number of travelers crossing the border dropped on 31 December – 1 January. Afterwards, the border crossing points again faced queues, with twice as many people leaving Belarus than those entering the country. “The majority of the travelers were Russian citizens. Many of them decided to visit European countries through Belarus during their long holidays that will last until 8 January. Since the beginning of the year the border guards have registered more than 140,000 travelers, among which 70% are Russian citizens”, said the State Border Committee.

According to recent data, approximately 260 private vehicles are awaiting their turn on the border with Lithuania, while in the Polish direction there is a queue of 390 cars. There are no traffic jams on the borders with Latvia and Ukraine.

The State Border Committee is expecting a rise in the traffic flow entering Belarus at the end of the Christmas holidays as the travelers start coming back home.
