More Belarusians go to China for studying every year

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – The number of Belarusians studying in China rises by roughly 100 people every year. The fact was mentioned by Belarusian Education Minister Igor Karpenko during the international conference held as part of the launch of the Year of Education of Belarus in China, BelTA has learned.

Igor Karpenko noted that over 2,100 students from China are being taught in Belarusian universities. “Nearly 1,000 Belarusian citizens are studying in China as part of various programs, including over 200 people studying thanks to Chinese grants. The number of Belarusians studying in China rises by roughly 100 people every year,” said the education minister.

So far Belarusian and Chinese universities have signed over 350 direct agreements on cooperation. A number of bilateral scientific and educational projects are being implemented within the framework of these agreements. The agreements also envisage academic exchange programs and the establishment of joint educational bodies. “Last year we celebrated the 25th anniversary since Belarus and China established diplomatic relations. For a quarter of the century the relations have been advancing dynamically, productively and have reached the level of trustful strategic partnership. Both countries have formed a colossal potential for further advancement of mutually beneficial cooperation, including in education,” stressed Igor Karpenko.

Apart from that, the Belarusian Education Ministry has come up with a strategy to develop the system for studying and teaching the Chinese language in 2017-2020. It provides for a broad range of events, projects, and measures able to satisfy Belarus' demand for Chinese-speaking specialists.

An international conference on prospects of advancing Belarus-China relations in the sphere of education took place as part of the launch of the Year of Education of Belarus in China. Representatives of Belarusian and Chinese education administration bodies, heads of higher education institutions, and scientists took part in the conference. While in China the Belarusian delegation visited the Belarusian studies center in the Dalian Polytechnic University. A ceremony to present awards for significant contributions to the advancement of Belarus-China cooperation in education was arranged. After that Igor Karpenko met with students of the university.
