Minsk to host seminar on local self-government with Council of Europe experts

MINSK, 5 December (BelTA) – A seminar on the development of associations of local councils of deputies will take place in Minsk on 11 December. Experts of the Council of Europe will take part in the seminar, the press service of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus told BelTA.

The Council of Europe experts will present the European experience of local self-government in Council of Europe countries. They will also inform participants about how associations of local self-government bodies are created and operate using Denmark, the UK, Bulgaria, Serbia, and other countries as an example. Recommendations on setting up and developing associations of local self-government bodies in Belarus will be presented.

The discussion is supposed to produce proposals on improving the effectiveness of such associations in Belarus. There are two associations of the kind in the country – in Mogilev Oblast and Gomel Oblast. Interaction in this format is aimed at coordinating efforts of local councils of deputies to develop the territorial, financial, economic, organizational, and legal foundations for local self-government. It helps them more effectively address matters of local importance taking into account interests and needs of people living in the specific region.

The event has been organized as part of the work of the council on interaction of local self-government bodies under the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament.
