Minsk riot policeman wins lawsuit against Nexta Telegram channel

MINSK, 22 September (BelTA) – A riot policeman from Minsk has won a lawsuit against the Telegram channel Nexta, official representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs Olga Chemodanova posted in her Telegram channel, BelTA has learned.

“In July, the Telegram channel Nexta posted the information saying that Aleksei Kovalev, a riot policeman of the Main Directorate of Internal Affairs of the Minsk city administration, was allegedly caught on video cavorting with prostitutes. As the information was false, the riot policeman filed a lawsuit for the damage to reputation and dignity. The internal affairs division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs provided legal support,” Olga Chemodanova said.

The investigation found out that the photos attached to the compromising post did not depict Aleksei Kovalev but another man who did not look like him.

On 10 September, the Minsk District Court ruled in favor of the riot policeman. The administrator of the Telegram channel is to pay the plaintiff Br2,500 as a compensation for moral damage and to publish a retraction. Aleksei Kovalev intends to donate the money to charity.
