Minsk European Games opening ceremony to use AR imagery

MINSK, 24 May (BelTA) – The opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games in Minsk will feature a show with augmented reality imagery, head of the ceremonies and cultural programs of the Minsk European Games Organizing Committee (MEGOC) Sergei Khomich told journalists, BelTA has learned.

“Information technologies will be one of the central elements of the show thanks to the use of augmented reality elements”, Sergei Khomich said.

The AR technology enhances the real world with virtual objects and is one of the most promising technologies. The show will bring to life images of Belarusian flora and fauna. Guests will be able to see animals and birds around them through their smartphones using a free application which will soon be available for download in App Store and Google Play. The application will “tie” itself to a viewer's seat and show the augmented reality elements on the smartphone screen.

The audience will not only watch a spectacular show but also participate in it thanks to special audience prop which will be presented to guests as a souvenir from the 2nd European Games. Every viewer will find a present under their seat including a backpack and a glowing bracelet among other things.

Opening ceremonies usually attract more viewers that any sport event so organizers always try hard to present the host country in the best possible light. The opening ceremony will showcase Belarus' rich historical past, culture, achievements and aims.

Belarus will host such an important, large scale, and complex event as the European Games for the first time. The games is a multisport event and the opening ceremony will reflect the scale of the forum.

The opening ceremony of the 2nd European Games will take place at Dinamo National Olympic Stadium in Minsk on 21 June. Script, decorations, dancing and vocal performances and other creative solutions have been created specifically for the opening ceremony.
