Metropolitan Veniamin calls for resolving refugee crisis on Belarus-Poland border

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – Belarusians provide help to the refugees but the very problem should still be resolved, Metropolitan Veniamin of Minsk and Zaslavl, Patriarch Exarch of All Belarus, said commenting on the situation on the Belarus-Poland border, BelTA has learned.

“Let's turn to the Old Testament. It has many tenets telling us how to treat outlanders, that is, people who come from other places, immigrants for some reason. The Old Testament says that we need to show benevolence, compassion towards them. It even says to give bread to our enemies in difficult times. In fact, we are also aliens on this earth, like many of our ancestors. And this prompts us to realize that at the end of our journey of life we will appear before God and will be called to account for our deeds. Therefore, it is very important that those who can influence this situation should meet these poor people halfway and resolve the problem. After all, Christmas is approaching,” he said.

The Metropolitan noted that today people in the central part of Europe endure great sorrow, difficulties, and some even die. “Of course, people help. But this help is temporary - to give food, warm clothes, accommodation. It is important, but it is also imperative to solve the very problem,” he stated.
