Matviyenko: Politicians bear special responsibility for preserving historical truth

MINSK, 7 May (BelTA) - Politicians bear a special responsibility for preserving the historical truth, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko said as she took part in a video conference dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory on 7 May, BelTA has learned.

These days politicians and scholars of many countries turn to the topic of the war and Victory, discuss the events of those years, try to work out recommendations for the future. “Politicians bear a special responsibility for preserving the historical truth, for veterans, patriotic education of young people. Only the consistent, responsible, honest implementation of this noble mission can ensure a prosperous future of humanity, shielded against world wars,” Valentina Matviyenko noted.

The speaker recalled that during the Second World War the countries with different ideologies and political systems were able to overcome differences, to unite against common evil. “I think we need to reflect once again on the lessons of Victory, its importance for the present and the future. We must ensure that the victory over Nazism in that terrible war is recognized by the mankind as the global heritage, and monuments to the liberators as the global memorial,” Valentina Matviyenko said.

“It is our sacred duty to honor the heroes who saved the world from fascism," she said.

As it has been reported, the video conference was attended by Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova, the heads of the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Moldova, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The participants to the video conference discussed the issues of preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War, patriotic education of young people, support for veterans and also joint historical and cultural projects dedicated to the military events and the Great Victory.
