Kochanova holds talks with WHO regional director for Europe

MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) – At the instruction of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Natalya Kochanova held talks with WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge. During the conversation Natalya Kochanova confirmed the invitation for WHO specialists to visit Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Council of the Republic.

The discussion was held by videoconferencing. The parties discussed a broad range of issues – from Belarus' cooperation with WHO in general up to the arrangement of the visit of WHO experts. Natalya Kochanova updated the WHO Regional Office for Europe on the epidemiological situation in Belarus and the measures the country is taking to curb the spread of the coronavirus. She also thanked WHO for close cooperation with Belarus.

“Today we see a great number of false stories and fake news related to the measures taken by our country. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko asked to extend this invitation so that WHO specialists will assess the ongoing developments in Belarus and the performance of our healthcare system,” Natalya Kochanova said.

She added that Belarus is doing everything to minimize the damage associated with the virus. “The head of state reiterates that people are in the focus of our efforts. We are not hiding anything. Everything is being done to minimize losses for the people and the country,” she said.

Hans Kluge thanked the Belarusian president for the invitation. “It is very important that the head of state is so involved in the matter. I am glad to learn about it. Earlier I sent a letter to the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry saying that the Belarusian authorities are doing everything right. Now a moment has come to mobilize the public to overcome this situation,” he said. Hans Kluge added that he will discuss a possibility to send WHO experts to Belarus with the WHO officials.

Representative of the World Health Organization to Belarus Batyr Berdyklychev confirmed again that Belarus sticks to WHO recommendations.
