MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) - Chairman of the Belarusian State Security Committee Ivan Tertel explained the reasons for strengthening border controls on the external border of Belarus as he talked to the media, BelTA has learned.
He recalled that he had previously announced the plans to take additional measures to strengthen the counterintelligence regime in Belarus. "This measure is currently being implemented along the entire perimeter of our border. It is aimed at timely detection and localization of the activities of persons who harbor terrorist, extremist aspirations in relation to Belarus," the KGB chief said.
According to him, the KGB is receiving the information that people from combat groups formed on the territory of Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic are hatching real plans about committing terrorist attacks in Belarus. "This barrier [enhanced border controls] is only one of the components that will help us to put together a filer of sorts and not allow these persons to enter our territory."
