Isachenko speaks on achievements and goals of sustainable development in Belarus

MINSK, 1 December (BelTA) – Much has been done in the field of sustainable development in Belarus, but there is still a lot to be done, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals Anatoly Isachenko told reporters. On 1 December he held a meeting by video-conference with UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki, BelTA has learned.

“Today, a lot has been done in Belarus to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, but we still have more work to do,” Anatoly Isachenko said.

According to him, people are always at the heart of the SDGs. “No one should be left behind, and all the 17 sustainable development goals are aimed at this. This is a barrier-free environment, the elimination of poverty, illiteracy, the involvement of each person in social activities. In other words, each goal addresses a certain task. I would like to note that in 2020 Belarus improved its standing in the global Sustainable Development Goals Index moving to the 18th position among 166 countries,” he said.

The agenda of the meeting included some current issues. In particular, the parties reviewed the results of joint work and discussed a possibility of the further cooperation in supporting the national architecture for managing the SDG achievement process and implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at the regional level. They also discussed plans for 2021.
