MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – The Council of Ministers has approved an international technical aid project designed to improve the safety of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The decision is laid down by the Council of Ministers' resolution No.238 of 17 April 2020, BelTA learned from the Council of Ministers website.
The project will be coordinated by the Energy Ministry. The ministry's Press Secretary Zhanna Zenkevich explained the project had been developed in close association with the International Atomic Energy Agency and will be implemented within two years.
The official said the IAEA's main role is to transfer knowledge and share the best practices relating to the operational safety of nuclear power plants via individual and group educational events as well as expert missions.
The project's implementation will help further improve the personnel training system, realize an integrated control system, improve the operational safety, perfect the handling of radioactive waste, and raise emergency preparedness. The project will help enable effective interaction between key organizations in charge of implementing the country's nuclear energy program – the Energy Ministry, the Emergencies Ministry, the Healthcare Ministry, the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, and the state enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.
Apart from that, resolution No.238 approves the technical aid project “Improvement of cutting-edge radiation therapy methods, including quality guarantees and quality management.” The Healthcare Ministry is in charge of overseeing the project's implementation.
Another project provides for stepping up cooperation of the Belarusian border service and the Lithuanian one during preparations for and during actual mass events. The project will be coordinated by the State Border Committee of Belarus.
The decision was made on the basis of proposals of the International Technical Cooperation Commission under the Council of Ministers.
The document comes into force as of the day of its adoption.
