International Association of Academies of Sciences, Union State sign cooperation agreement

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) - The International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS) and the Standing Committee of the Union State of Belarus and Russia signed a cooperation agreement. The signatures were put by the IAAS head, the chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Gusakov and State Secretary of the Union State Grigory Rapota, BelTA has learned.

“The conclusion of the cooperation agreement between the IAAS and the Standing Committee of the Union State is an important event. The IAAS brings together organizations from 16 countries, including the CIS countries, Vietnam, China, Montenegro. By pooling together the scientific communities of such a huge space, we can solve various problems relevant for the Union State. The IAAS has 24 scientific councils that work in nanotechnology, chemistry and biology, book publishing, medicine, including COVID-19, youth, and other issues,” Vladimir Gusakov noted.

Grigory Rapota stressed that the Union State views scientific and technological progress as a driver of economic development. "We try to harness every opportunity. The signing of this agreement is one of them. I think the International Association of Academies of Sciences and the Union State have something to offer each other. The Academies of Sciences of Belarus and Russia will help us to define the avenues of cooperation. For example, one of the interesting areas is optics. Developing the common scientific and technological space is an important goal too,” he noted.

In accordance with the agreement, the IAAS and the Standing Committee of the Union State will exchange information, hold joint meetings and consultations, practical and thematic events in science and technology, and coordinate joint activities.

Earlier, the IAAS signed a memorandum of cooperation with the CIS Executive Committee.

The International Association of Academies of Sciences was established in Kiev on 23 September 1993. In 2017 the NASB assumed organizational and methodological functions of the association. Chairman of the NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov was elected head of the association. The IAAS Council is the supreme governing body of the IAAS. The association includes 13 full-fledged and 6 associate members and has 17 scientific councils.
