IAEA's nuclear material accounting mission to visit Belarus in late May

SOCHI, 16 April (BelTA) – A State Systems of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Material (ISSAS) mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will visit Belarus in late May, BelTA learned from Olga Lugovskaya, Head of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor), during the Atomexpo forum in Sochi.

The official said: “An ISSAS mission will arrive in late May 2019. It will evaluate the infrastructure for accounting for and control of nuclear materials in the context of construction and commissioning of the Belarusian nuclear power plant.”

Apart from that, there is an agreement on a visit of the IAEA's Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission and a security infrastructure mission.

Olga Lugovskaya noted that countries make decisions to invite IAEA missions voluntarily. In her words, it is important for Belarus taking into account the fact that the IAEA determines the main requirements for security and formulates the main safety standards. “Any mission is meant to arrange a self-evaluation and receive recommendations from experienced partners, from countries with a well-developed nuclear energy industry. It is important and necessary experience for the country,” the Gosatomnadzor head said.
