IAEA's ISSAS mission to visit Belarus in May

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) - The IAEA Safeguards Advisory Service Mission (ISSAS) will visit Belarus in late May 2019. A preparatory meeting for the mission took place in the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor), BelTA learned from the department.

The IAEA experts led by head of the ISSAS mission Vladimir Tsisar met with representatives of the Belarusian regulatory authority in nuclear and radiation safety, other government bodies and organizations to discuss administrative and thematic aspects of the mission. The ISSAS mission is scheduled for 27-31 May.

The IAEA ISSAS mission is held at the request of the host country. The goals and tasks of the ISSAS mission are to evaluate the legal framework and regulatory, administrative and technical issues related to state systems of accounting for and control of nuclear material both at the state and organization levels, and also to evaluate the effectiveness of these systems in relation to the implementation of safeguards (the corresponding agreement on safeguards under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) by the state. The mission also works to identify areas where it is possible to improve the effectiveness of further cooperation with the IAEA on the accounting for and control of nuclear material and where recommendations can be made on how to correct or remedy any deficiencies identified.

“Inviting the ISSAS mission, Belarus continues the consistent practice of inviting international IAEA assessment missions to the country to improve its nuclear and radiation safety system and its individual components on the basis of modern international safety standards in the context of the first nuclear energy program,” the Gosatomnadzor said. Belarus welcomed an Integrated Regulatory Review Service Mission (IRRS) in October 2016, and the Emergency Preparedness Review Mission (EPREV) in October 2018.
