MINSK, 5 August (BelTA) - Hiroshima proposes to expand cooperation with the Belarusian cities and regions affected by the Chernobyl accident, the Belarusian Embassy in Japan told BelTA.
“On 5 August, Belarusian Ambassador to Japan Ruslan Yesin met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui,” the diplomatic mission said. “The mayor thanked the ambassador for participation in the events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of the city, and for the summer program for children from Hiroshima in the National Children's Education and Health Center Zubryonok in 2019.
Kazumi Matsui proposed to expand cooperation with the Belarusian cities and regions affected by the Chernobyl accident.
For his part, the Belarusian ambassador spoke about the importance of preserving the memory of the victims of devastating wars and raising the awareness of the young generation about the heroism of the defenders of the homeland, and the tragedies of the civilian population. He offered to join the Belarusian campaign to lay capsules with soil from the Second World War important sites. The proposal was welcomed by the mayor of the Japanese city.
The parties expressed readiness to hold joint cultural events and organize presentations of the economic potential of Belarus in Hiroshima in 2021.
Ambassador Ruslan Yesin laid flowers at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial commemorating the victims of the atomic bombing which took place on 6 August 1945.
On 6 August the Belarusian diplomat will take part in a commemorative peace ceremony and will meet with the Japanese schoolchildren who vacationed in Zubryonok in the summer of 2019.
