Growing number of Belarusian families tap into family capital prematurely

MINSK, 9 July (BelTA) – Over 16,000 Belarusian families have already tapped into family capital prematurely, BelTA learned from Marina Artemenko, Head of the Population, Gender and Family Policy Office of the Labor and Social Protection Ministry.

According to the source, the family capital program has been extended through 2024. Apart from that, the number of reasons family capital can be spent prematurely (before the child turns 18) has been increased. Thus, family capital can be used to improve housing conditions, acquire housing, or pay back loans. The types of paid medical services family capital can be spent on has been increased and now includes dentistry. Dentist services can be received by any member of the family. Family capital can also be used to get university education for any member of the family.

Over 85,500 large families in Belarus have been granted family capital so far. Over 16,000 decisions on spending family capital prematurely have been issued. In 94% of the cases the families intend to use it to improve their housing.

According to Marina Artemenko, results of five years of the family capital program's implementation demonstrate the program's effectiveness. “The number of third-born children and consequent children has increased by 40% over the course of five years,” she added.
