Grodno rescue workers, volunteer firefighters from Poland participate in joint exercise

GRODNO, 14 August (BelTA) – An international tactical exercise for rescue workers took place near Grodno, BelTA learned from the Grodno Oblast Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry.

Volunteer firefighters from Dobrzyniewo Duze Municipality, Podlaskie Voivodeship, Poland came to Belarus to participate in the exercise together with Grodno rescue workers. Responses to various situations were practiced over the course of several days.

For instance, on 13 August the guests from Poland were made familiar with the rescue and firefighting equipment the local firefighters use. Grodno rescue workers demonstrated how they fight fires and release people trapped in crashed vehicles. The Polish volunteer firefighters also practiced using hydraulic tools in the course of dealing with a traffic accident. Apart from that, during the exercise the Belarusian rescue workers dealt with an accident involving the spill of flammable liquid on a railroad.

One of the stages of the exercise took place at the Augustow Canal on 14 August. Belarusian rescue workers demonstrated their skills in the course of search and rescue operations. According to the legend of the exercise, a kayak tipped over near the Nemnovo sluice and two tourists fell into water. The rescue workers saved the men, transported them to the river bank, and lifted the kayak from the bottom of the river.

The exercise was arranged as part of the international technical aid project “The new approach to the cross-border emergency management system”, which is financed by the European Union as part of the transboundary cooperation program Poland-Belarus-Ukraine 2014-2020. The total budget exceeds €1.1 million. A fire tank truck and a cross-country car were acquired as part of the project in 2020. There are plans to build a fire station in the town of Sopotskin, Grodno District and buy a boat and a trailer for it.
