GRODNO, 29 July (BelTA) – Healthcare workers who have made a significant contribution to the fight against COVID-19 were honored in the Community Center of Grodno on 29 July, BelTA has learned.
Among the awardees were doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, a total of more than 50 people. They were given prizes, commendation letters, diplomas of the Grodno City Executive Committee and the Council of Deputies, trade unions and public associations.
“The pandemic made everyone reconsider their priorities, reminding them of the fragility and value of human life and health. And today we say “thank you” to those who selflessly and heroically worked in this difficult time,” Grodno Mayor Mechislav Goi said at the ceremony. He noted that the situation in the city remained under control thanks to concerted efforts, and now Grodno is returning to its usual way of life.
Pneumonia patients, including those who contracted the COVID-19 infection, were admitted to Municipal Hospital No. 2 that was re-purposed to treat coronavirus patients. The hospital has treated about 1,300 patients diagnosed with coronavirus. The city's polyclinics also faced a huge workload.
"Much attention was paid to the protection of medical workers, provision of personal protective equipment. The city took timely action to launch the production of personal protective equipment at local enterprises. Some companies were re-purposed to produce PPE," Mechislav Goi said. For example, one of the enterprises making automotive components produced more than 50,000 face masks per shift. Clothing manufacturers also re-purposed production lines to make gowns, shoe covers and other PPE items. Companies and organizations of the city also provided financial aid.
The work of doctors is highly appreciated by Grodno residents. Mechislav Goi read out several thank-you letters sent to the executive committee.
The oblast capital will continue celebrating its healthcare professionals. They will be honored again on the City Day that is traditionally celebrated in Grodno in September. The title of "Person of the Year Grodno" will be awarded to a physician, perhaps more than one.
