Gomel Oblast to develop nostalgic tourism

GOMEL, 20 February (BelTA) – Gomel Oblast intends to develop nostalgic tourism in 2020, head of the sports and tourism department of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee Pavel Starosvetsky told journalists ahead of the board meeting to discuss the tourism industry performance in 2019 and targets for 2020,” BelTA has learned.

Gomel Oblast will invite people who were born here but later settled in various parts of the continent and the world to explore the region and see their birthplace in a new light.

Nostalgic tourism is expected to be in demand. Such types of tourism as medical, industrial, business, and agro-ecotourism remain popular in Gomel Oblast.

Gomel Oblast export of tourist services topped $17.7 million in 2019 (with the target at $15.6 million), up by 3.6% over 2018. Major tourism source markets included Russia and Ukraine, the region also saw visitors from distant countries.

“Our export of tourist services is rather high, but there is room for improvement,” Pavel Starosvetsky said. Gomel Oblast offers various tourist routes and has started designing new bicycle routes.

“The region is developing not only for the sake of tourists but also for local residents,” Pavel Starosvetsky stressed. According to him, effective presentation of the region's potential is also important. “We should not only upgrade the existing sites but also successfully promote them,” he added.

Gomel Oblast has also established more international ties, for example, with Russia's Kirov Oblast, Ukraine's Chernigov Oblast, and the Chinese autonomous region Inner Mongolia.

This year Gomel Oblast intends to continue boosting the tourism industry. Plans are in place to set up an open-air museum in Pripyatsky National Park, complete the renovation of the water channel and the construction of a new tourist destination, hold fairs, workshops, and presentations.
