Decision to scrap roaming charges between Belarus, Russia stumbles over mobile carriers

ST PETERSBURG, 17 July (BelTA) – The decision to scrap roaming charges between Belarus and Russia has not been made yet due to the stance of mobile carriers, BelTA learned from Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Yuri Vorobyev on the sidelines of the 6th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia on 17 July.

The senator said: “So far we've been unable to come up with an acceptable decision to scrap roaming charges. It is unrelated to the state policy of our countries but purely to the economic views of owners of mobile carriers.”

He added that work continues. Yuri Vorobyev said he was confident the problem would be resolved in the end. “Unfortunately, we've been unable to resolve it within one year but it will definitely be resolved,” the Russian senator said.

In turn, Deputy Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Marianna Shchetkina pointed out that the problem of roaming charges was indeed a complicated one, this is why it was difficult to get it resolved within one year. “It is still on the agenda, work continues,” she concluded.
