CSTO Military Committee review defense cooperation, security threats

MOSCOW, 21 April (BelTA) - The CSTO Military Committee reviewed the status of military cooperation between the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization at a videoconference meeting on 20 April, BelTA learned from the CSTO press service.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces - First Deputy Minister Defense of Belarus, Major General Viktor Gulevich made a report on the priority areas of the CSTO's military activities proposed by the Republic of Belarus for the period of its CSTO chairmanship in 2023 and measures for their implementation.

Challenges and threats to military security in the CSTO collective security regions were discussed during the meeting. Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov reported on the progress in the work to improve the mechanisms of crisis response, logistical support for the CSTO troops (collective forces) and other areas.

"The meeting examined the ways of improving the organization of flights in the CSTO airspace and international flights by aviation of the armed forces of the CSTO member states," the press service noted.

The Military Committee discussed the joint exercises of command and control bodies and the forces and means of the CSTO collective security system in 2023. The press service recalled that this year a set of exercises (CSTO collective forces) will be held in the form of a joint operational-strategic exercise Combat Brotherhood. Belarus will host joint and special CSTO exercises this year. This is the Interaction exercise of the CSTO Collective Rapid Response Forces, the Search exercise of intelligence units and the Echelon exercise of logistics support forces, a special exercise of radiation, chemical and biological protection and medical support units Barrier 2023 and a special exercise with the Emergencies Ministry units allocated to the CSTO CRRF special forces Skala 2023.

Plans are in place to conduct a joint exercise with the CSTO peacekeeping forces Indestructible Brotherhood 2023 at the final stage of the joint operational-strategic exercise Combat Brotherhood 2023 in Kyrgyzstan.

"Following the discussion, the committee decided to continue the practice of coupling joint exercises of CSTO troops (collective forces) with the exercises of the armed forces of the CSTO member states and exercises with regional (united) groups of troops (forces)," the press service noted.

"The next meeting of the Military Committee is due in the second half of 2023 and will be hosted by the Republic of Belarus, which chairs the CSTO this year," the press service added.

The event was presided by Chairman of the Military Committee, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia - First Deputy Defense Minister of he Russian Federation, General of the Army Valery Gerasimov. The meeting was attended by the heads of the General Staffs of the Armed Forces of Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, the Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov and CSTO Deputy Secretary General Takhir Khairuloyev, representatives of the defense ministries of the CSTO member states, the Joint Staff and the CSTO Secretariat.
