CSTO countries adopt statement on Afghanistan

MOSCOW, 15 September (BelTA) - The joint statement of the CSTO member states “On the situation in Afghanistan” was adopted at a meeting of the Foreign Ministers Council, the Defense Ministers Council, and the Committee of Security Council Secretaries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Dushanbe on 15 September, CSTO Press Secretary Vladimir Zainetdinov told BelTA.

The document urges all ethnic and confessional groups in Afghanistan to refrain from armed conflicts, take necessary measures to normalise the situation, protect the lives of civilians, restore peace and economic development, and eradicate terrorism and drug-related crime in all their forms and manifestations in Afghanistan.

The CSTO member states also called for the suppression of any threats to security emanating from the territory of Afghanistan and reaffirm their determination to use the resources available to the CSTO to ensure the security of its member states.

In addition, the document calls on the international community to increase humanitarian aid to the Afghan population, reaffirms the intention of the CSTO states to assist Afghanistan in becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous country free of terrorism, war and drugs, and the readiness to participate in international efforts to stabilize and develop Afghanistan under the central coordinating role of the UN.
