COVID-19 patients advised to have flu shot one month after recovery

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – People diagnosed with the COVID-19 infection are recommended to receive a flu vaccine a month after recovery. This information was posted on the website of the Belarusian Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health, BelTA has learned.

This autumn flu vaccination is more important than ever, healthcare professionals say. Taking into consideration that the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread among the population, it is expected to overlap with the seasonal rise in acute respiratory infections. A person can get infected with several viruses at once. Another option is that a person can catch a new virus after developing a viral disease.

The combination of the COVID-19 infection and seasonal flu is particularly dangerous. Both viruses can badly affect lung tissue, causing pneumonia.

The flu vaccine provides specific immunity against influenza A and B viruses. However, there is some scientific evidence that flu vaccination can have a positive effect in preventing the COVID-19 infection. The use of vaccine adjuvants can help develop specific antibodies to the flu virus and prompt early activation of cellular mechanisms of antiviral response leading to the decrease in the incidence of influenza and acute respiratory infections, and, most likely, the coronavirus infection.

People who have had a coronavirus infection are also advised to get a flu shot. The Healthcare Ministry recommends receiving a flu vaccine not earlier than 30 calendar days after recovery. According to healthcare professionals, adults suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should also get a flu shot (during stability of the disease).
