NUCLEAR POWER IN BELARUS AND WORLDWIDE
MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – Foreign intelligence services stepped up their operation in Belarus and Russia in the last few years. State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich mentioned it at an offsite session of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization in Minsk, BelTA has learned.
Aleksandr Volfovich said: “Reconnaissance and subversive actions of foreign intelligence services increased in Russia and Belarus in the last few years. Yet another attempt of saboteurs to destabilize the situation in Belarus and spoil the celebration of Victory Day was stopped ahead of 9 May. The arrested individuals are providing testimony. It has been ascertained that Ukraine's intelligence services are behind the attempt. I know that similar reconnaissance and sabotage teams have been recently detained in Russia's territory thanks to joint efforts of the FSB and the KGB. Efforts of these teams are aimed at undermining security and inflicting damage without a care for civilians and the peaceful life of citizens of our countries.”
The official went on saying that meanwhile, more efforts are being poured into finding new sore spots and triggers in the Belarusian society for the sake of organizing provocations able to stir up the situation. For the sake of ensuring stability in politics and neutralizing domestic threats to national security a state system has been created in Belarus to respond to acts of terrorism, operation of terrorist organizations, and illegal armed groups. Its effectiveness has been proven recently. The forces and assets belonging to this system conduct systematic drills and exercises. Their results are reported to the president and are closely monitored by the head of state, Aleksandr Volfovich noted.
Apart from that, in order to ensure the stability of military security Belarus' defense, security, and law enforcement agencies (primarily the army and other military units) have been switched to enhanced security mode. They were also moved towards the state border and help cover border service units for the sake of preventing various provocations, Aleksandr Volfovich said. “I am primarily talking about the western direction. To prevent an assault against us and the back of Russia's Armed Forces, which are engaged in a special military operation in Ukraine. Apart from that, southern borders are now covered. The Belarus-Ukraine border was totally uncovered in the past because Ukrainians are a friendly nation for us. But attempts have been recently taken to cross our state border and commit subversive actions or smuggle weapons and explosives into Belarus.”
