CIS Expert Council to host video conference on diabetes

MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) – The CIS Expert Council to host a meeting in the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk on 13 May to discuss diabetes-related issues. The meeting will be held in the format of a video conference, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

“The Expert Council plans to discuss issues related to the treatment of diabetes patients with COVID-19, review the implementation of the decisions taken at the 29th-30th meetings of the CIS Council for Cooperation in Healthcare and also cooperation programs for prevention and treatment of diabetes,” the press service said.

The participants of the meeting will analyze statistics on diabetes in the CIS countries for 2019, discuss the holding of the CIS international conference “Diabetes: Modern approaches to the organization of medical and social assistance", and make proposals to the draft agenda of the 31st meeting of the Council.

Diabetes is a worldwide medical and social problem. People with diabetes usually have limited opportunities for self-realization. They often become disabled. The treatment is expensive, including expensive medications and blood sugar check devices. Diabetes increases the risk of coronary heart disease and heart attack by two times, kidney pathology by 17 times, gangrene of the lower limbs by 20 times, arterial hypertension by three times. Diabetes is in first place among the causes of blindness. More than half of blind people suffer from this disease. More than 4 million people die annually from complications of diabetes, and diabetes ranks third behind heart disease and cancer as a cause of death worldwide.
