Call to document crimes against refugees stranded at Belarus-Poland border

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – It is necessary to document the evidence of crimes committed against refugees, Candidate of Sciences [History], Chairman of the board of the Belarusian Znanie society Vadim Gigin told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“You know what is going on at the Polish border now and how things were at the Lithuanian border earlier. Several statements have been made to launch an international criminal investigation of crimes against humanity committed by the Polish and Lithuanian security forces and those politicians who give them orders. Yet, we are aware that state and interstate procedures are a rather lengthy process. Although the violation of international norms, the Refugee Convention and the Rome Statute is obvious. People are pushed out of the territory of the European Union because of their ethnicity and religion,” Vadim Gigin said.

According to him, this crisis is handiwork of Poland and Lithuania. “It is enough to have a look at what is happening now on the southern borders of the European Union, in the Mediterranean. We are social activists, and just the other day we voiced an idea (it was discussed before) that we should record evidence of the crimes that are being committed against refugees, because a crime that goes unreported and unpunished will most likely be committed again, unfortunately. And we see this full well in Poland,” the expert noted.

Vadim Gigin urged to look into the reasons that led to these crimes. “Collect evidence of what is happening. It is also important because we need to challenge the huge stream of lies and disinformation,” he added.
