Brest theater to mark Pushkin's 220th birthday with new project

BREST, 5 February (BelTA) – Brest Academic Drama Theater will show the Metel [The Snow Storm] literary and musical composition on 6 March in tribute to the upcoming 220th anniversary of the birth of famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin celebrated on 6 June, deputy director general of the theater Larisa Boriskina told BelTA.

People's Artist of Russia Yevgeny Knyazev will recite Pushkin's story to Georgy Sviridov's orchestral suite. The Brest audience had a chance to appreciate Yevgeny Knyazev's art during the previous editions of the Belaya Vezha international theater festival where the artist performed with his solo production The Queen of Spades.

"We discussed possible further cooperation with Yevgeny Knyazev. It turned out that the artist is currently touring Russian cities with his own project. Our theater has a wonderful symphony orchestra, which has a great experience of performing jointly with artists. That was how we came up with the idea to bring together the artist and our orchestra in the literary and musical project," said Larisa Boriskina.

The concert will be performed on 6 March in the big hall of the theater. On 7 March, Yevgeny Knyazev will present his project in the Belarusian State Philharmonic to the accompaniment of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus.

Alexander Pushkin wrote The Snow Storm in one day. The plot is based on the story of a rich provincial heiress, Marya Gavrilovna, who decides to run away from home in order to get married to her lover secretly. However, her groom could not reach the church because of the snowstorm, and the lady marries another man by mistake. The final ironic twist brings the story to a happy conclusion. The waltz “Romance” makes the lyrical centerpiece of the composition.
