MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) – Belarusians of Estonia condemn the incident with the Belarusian state flag in Riga and urge their compatriots to unite in the face of such attacks from the West, BelTA learned from Lyudmila Annus, the head of the Belarusian association Syabry based in Estonia's Narva.
“On behalf of the members of the board of the Narva-based Belarusian association Syabry I would like to express our outrage over the recent incident in Riga, when the mayor and the foreign minister, acting like common vandals, removed the state flag of Belarus and replaced it with the white-red-white flag ‘upon the request of political refugees from Belarus'. Every country has its own state symbols and no one but the country itself can change them,” Lyudmila Annus noted.
Unfortunately, we have witnessed a so-called war of flags recently, she noted. “The Russian flag was removed during the World Figure Skating Championships in Stockholm and the Women's World Championship in Warsaw… I would like to ask these people from Riga, what would they have done if Belarus had removed the Latvian flag during the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk. Would they be happy? We believe that all attacks against our motherland are aimed not at overthrowing Aleksandr Lukashenko, but at destroying the order that exists in Belarus and helps the country live in peace. We condemn this incident and urge our compatriots to rally together and resist these attacks from the West,” Lyudmila Annus stressed.
