Belarusian, U.S. doctors to collaborate in organ transplantation

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – Belarusian and U.S. American medical professionals will collaborate in organ transplantation with a view to minimizing follow-up complications in transplant recipients, BelTA learned from Deputy Director for Hematology of the Minsk National Research Center for Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology, Head of the National Center for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Anatoly Uss.

The Minsk National Research Center for Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology has welcomed Professor of Microbiology Eric Pamer, a Chicago-based infectious diseases specialist and immunity researcher. Eric Pamer specializes in hospital-acquired diseases, mostly those that develop after complicated surgeries like bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.

“Collaboration with him was launched through a grant won by one of the hospital members who has recently been awarded the Doctor of Medicine degree. His paper was dedicated to infections that can develop during bone marrow transplantation,” Anatoly Uss said.

There are plans to scale up cooperation with American partners. “We have told the American professor about our plans, technology and suggested joint projects to each other,” the deputy director said. By the way, a new building that will house the bone marrow transplantation center will be built on the premises of the Minsk National Research Center for Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology.

There are plans to formalize collaboration in the form of a joint program. This program will cover advanced training and collaboration in some areas of research, namely bone marrow, liver and kidney transplantation.
