Belarusian school students win medals at young mathematicians tournament in Paris

MINSK, 12 July (BelTA) - Belarusian school students won medals at the International Tournament of Young Mathematicians ITYM 2018 in Paris, BelTA learned from the press center of the Education Ministry.

Two Belarusian teams (team 1 and team 2) took part in the tournament, which was held from 5 to 12 July. They won gold and bronze medals. “Belarus team 1 placed first in the ranking of the teams participating in the tournament,” the press center said.

Twelve teams from eight countries (Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Georgia, India, Russia, Romania, France) took part in the event. All in all, Belarus has won six gold, three silver and five bronze medals over the years of participating in ITYM. This is the best result among all the countries participating in the International Tournament of Young Mathematicians ITYM.

The International Tournament of Young Mathematicians (ITYM) is an international competition in mathematics for high-school students. In contrast to the olympiads, the ITYM is a team-competition. The problems for the ITYM are published several months in advance and contain parts with no known solution. During the tournament the participating students present their results in a kind of research debate, the press center informed.
