Belarusian, Russian regulatory bodies discuss nuclear power plant pilot safety calculations

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – The Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) and the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia (Rostechnadzor) have discussed pilot calculations concerning the safety of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant, Gosatomnadzor representatives told BelTA.

Representatives of the Belarusian and Russian regulatory bodies determined approaches to making pilot calculations using specialized software (the thermal-hydraulic system code ATHLET, which stands for Analysis of THermal-hydraulics of LEaks and Transients) with a view to carrying out an additional audit of justification of the safety of the nuclear power plant near Ostrovets with assistance of experts from Belarus, Russia, and Germany.

Representatives of the Belarusian and Russian regulatory bodies also put together a joint events schedule for 2019-2020.

Apart from that, matters concerning the implementation of the national action plan resulting from the stress tests of the Belarusian nuclear power plant and a peer review were discussed.

The sides confirmed the need to promptly adopt the concept of the Union State program on improving approaches to emergency preparedness, emergency response, and safety regulation in the course of using nuclear energy.
