Belarusian political parties scolded for poor effort during parliamentary elections

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – Political parties did not use their advantages during the current elections to the parliament. The statement was made by the Belarusian political analyst Aleksandr Shpakovsky on the air of the TV channel Belarus One, BelTA has learned.

While talking about the election campaign and the possibility of switching from the majority voting system to a mixed or proportional one, the analyst said: “For some reason the political parties were not very active. They could directly nominate candidates without having to collect people's signatures in support of their candidates. No party has nominated candidates in all the constituencies.”

The only political party to nominate candidates in 107 constituencies was the Liberal Democratic Party. The other parties including leading opposition ones have failed to nominate candidates even in half of the constituencies, the political analyst said.

“If they choose not to do it, it may be strange if we change the system that works and give real leverage to such weak and infantile structures, which cannot even use the advantages the current legislation offers,” Aleksandr Shpakovsky believes.

Asked about the work of observers during the elections, the political analyst noted that views of observers and international recognition are important but, in the grand scheme of things, an election is a domestic affair of every country. “We often see not only in Belarus but in other countries as well that international observation can be used as a tool of pressure, that biased opinions can be presented in advance. I've worked as a member of international missions sent by the OSCE. I can say that no country belonging to the OSCE has fulfilled the OSCE recommendations in full,” he stated.
