Belarusian MPs may be required to take oath of office

MINSK, 14 May (BelTA) – Proposals have been made to supplement the Constitution with a provision on the parliamentary oath, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich said today during a meeting of the Constitutional Commission in Minsk on 14 May, BelTA has learned.

"The obligation requiring all Members of Parliament to take the oath is found in the constitutions of many countries. Based on the generally accepted practice it is proposed to supplement the Constitution of Belarus with a provision on the oath of allegiance for members of the House of Representatives, members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus and the text of the oath," Piotr Miklashevich said.

The Constitutional Commission held its fourth meeting on 14 May. The commission considered proposals to amend the constitutional provisions on the functions and powers of the parliament - the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

The Constitutional Commission held its first meeting on 31 March. Then it approved the schedule of its meetings, which are to be held twice a month.
