Belarusian MP: Coordination Council is illegitimate, has no authority

MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – The Coordination Council set up by the Belarusian opposition is illegitimate and does not have any authority, member of the Standing Commission on Legislation of the House of Representatives Irina Dovgalo told BelTA.

“The Coordination Council is illegitimate. By the same token, you and me could just establish some assembly. It would not have any authority. At present, the legislative power in Belarus is held by a separate branch of power, in line with the Constitution,” Irina Dovgalo said.

She also commented on the Coordination Council's call to launch the procedure of recalling deputies of all levels. “The members of the so-called Coordination Council, it seems, have no idea what the members of the House of Representatives do. First of all, we work with voters. These are our people who come to us with their problems and we try to help. All issues are resolved together with local authorities. Because it is the state authorities who have the means, authority, and resources to do this,” she noted.

Irina Dovgalo represents Gomel's Sovietsky constituency No.34. The MP stressed that some of the issues that were raised by voters of her constituency, have already been addressed. “We now have good roads and beautified courtyards. We even solved specific issues together with the education department. This might seem a small achievement, but there are a lot of them,” she said.

People come to deputies with their own proposals, Irina Dovgalo stressed. “We are currently working on a mammoth task regarding the president's instruction to amend the administrative legislation. Our voters have put forward very interesting proposals and asked to remove the articles that do not have legal precedents. We need to hear and listen to people all the time,” she added.
