MINSK, 2 September (BelTA) – Thanks to a comprehensive in-depth examination Belarusian doctors managed to come up with an efficient treatment for a patient from China, Head of the National Spine Center of the National Research Center for Trauma and Orthopedics of Belarus Sergei Makarevich told reporters, BelTA has learned.

The woman suffered from a chronic back pain and received a surgery on the lumber region of the spine in China. She started feeling better, her condition improved, the pain decreased. However, she still felt weakness in the left leg and experienced walking difficulty. The patient sought medical advice in Ukraine, however local doctors could not help her. After that she came to Belarus.

“At first we consulted her and found out that her case is quite complicated. We hospitalized her, conducted an in-depth examination, consulted with specialists from the National Research Center of Neurology and Neurosurgery. As a result, we found out that she had a neurological disease that could be treated without surgery. Thus, she received a comprehensive non-surgical treatment based the most advanced medication, physiotherapy, acupuncture and massage. This treatment option resulted in a considerable clinical improvement,” Sergei Makarevich said.

According to him, had this neurological disease not been diagnosed, the patient's condition would have deteriorated significantly. Now she needs follow-up care and rehabilitation in order to stabilize her condition.

The Chinese has been in Belarus for 1.5 months already. One of these days she will fly back to China. The woman has plans to come to Belarus next year to continue conservative treatment.

According to Director of the National Research Center for Trauma and Orthopedics Mikhail Gerasimenko, every year the center conducts about 30,000 consultations and about 6,000 surgeries. As far as foreign patients are concerned, most of them are Russian nationals (about 48-50%). In 2019, 14% were Ukrainians. There are also patients from the Middle East, Central Asia, Australia, the United States and Israel.

This year the National Research Center for Trauma and Orthopedics turns 90. The center performs virtually all the surgeries that are done in other countries.
