MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Belarusian healthcare professionals have performed a liver transplantation in a patient from Japan, Head of the Minsk Research Center for Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology Oleg Rummo told reporters during a press event in the research center, BelTA has learned.
According to Oleg Rummo, this project attests to the high level of Belarusian transplant surgery. Earlier the Japanese woman had her diseased liver replaced by foreign doctors, but the allograft liver was rejected. Belarusian doctors agreed to do re-grafting. The surgery was conducted in Minsk. “We had to deal with complications and nurse her back to health. Today the patient will be transferred from an intensive care ward to a regular ward,” Oleg Rummo said.
In his words, this surgery proves that Belarus' medicine is known all over the world.
The geography of patients coming to Belarus for transplantation is pretty big. However, the majority of them come from Ukraine. Transplant surgeries are performed in line with the agreement with the Ministry of Healthcare and the government of Ukraine.
Apart from that, Belarusian surgeons go to other countries to perform transplant surgeries. This year alone, the doctors of the research center performed six kidney transplant surgeries abroad, including in Georgia and Kazakhstan. Armenia also asked Belarusian specialists for assistance. At present, a group of Armenian doctors is undergoing training at the research center.
“We cannot meet medical needs of all patients seeking help in Belarus, because the priority is given to Belarusian nationals. Anyway, if we have an opportunity to operate a Belarusian resident, this person will be the first in line,” Oleg Rummo said.
Since 2008, the export of medical services skyrocketed 42 times. The most popular medical services are surgeries and organ transplantations (66.44%), hematology and replacement of bone marrow (31.48%).More about Society
