Belarus, Ukraine to build on joint efforts to tackle illegal migration

MINSK, 20 March (BelTA) – Belarus and Ukraine will step up joint efforts to deter illegal migration. This is one of the key points of the bilateral agreement on readmission. The House of Representatives of Belarus is working on its ratification, member of the Standing Commission on Law of the House of Representatives Vitaly Vlasevich told BelTA.

The agreement was signed in October 2018 with a view to promoting and expanding good neighborly and partner relations between the two states. “Belarus and Ukraine will strengthen bilateral cooperation in various fields, including fight against illegal migration and transboundary organized crime,” the MP noted. The agreement will introduce principles and norms regulating readmission procedures and will help better coordinate joint efforts to deter illegal migration.

The document spells out grounds for and procedures of admission of Belarusian and Ukrainian nationals, citizens of third countries and stateless persons who are in the territory of one of the parties to the agreement in violation of the law. Such people will be handled by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Border Committee of Belarus and the State Migration Service and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. The document also specifies how readmission inquiries should be compiled and sent, how people subject to readmission, including nationals of third states and stateless persons, should be escorted. “The parties will seek to minimize the incidents of readmission of nationals of third countries and stateless persons if such persons can be returned directly to the state of their citizenship or permanent residence,” Vitaly Vlasevich said.

The document was drafted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus in cooperation with the State Migration Service of Ukraine.
