Belarus to host bird photo contest on 26 January

MINSK, 20 January (BelTA) – The bird open winter photo contest will take place in Belarus on 26 January, BelTA learned from the BirdLife Belarus public organization.

Unlike an ordinary bird watcher that observes birds through binoculars, a bird photographer aims to take pictures of birds in the wild. The photographer that captures the greatest number of various types of birds within five hours (10.00-15.00) will win the contest. The participants get points for each type of birds. The online identifier or the mobile app will help to determine which type of bird is in the shot. After the contest, the organizers will choose the winners and the best standalone photograph. Just like at the previous contests, the jury can introduce some additional nominations and reward several other interesting photos and gifted participants. The best bird photographers will be awarded.

The contest will be held throughout Belarus. “Experience has taught us that choosing not to gather the participants in one location helps the contest gain popularity. A year ago we had 100 participants. We really hope that the contest will also prove interesting to many this time. The photographers are free to choose their own routes and tactics. They are allowed to use cars. It is exactly the well-chosen route that will play a vital role in securing a prize-winning place,” said Semyon Levy, the coordinator of the contest.

You can take part in the contest both individually and in a team of two. Those willing to participate need to download an application form from the website of the BirdLife Belarus public organization, fill it out and send it to levy@ptushki.org. Applications are open until 17.00 on 24 January. Foreign citizens are also invited to participate in the contest.

The winter bird photo contest will be held for the second time. All together the participants of the first contest captured the images 86 species of birds within five hours such as the whooper swan, the northern pintail, the great crested grebe, the greater white-fronted goose, the horned lark, the greater scaup and the Arctic redpoll.
