Belarus to close small municipal solid waste dumpsites by 2022

MINSK, 18 March (BelTA) – Belarus plans to shut down all its small municipal solid waste dumpsites by 2022, Marina Tolstik, the head of utilities and energy at the Housing and Utilities Ministry, told the media, BelTA has learned.

The project is supported by the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The number of small municipal solid waste dumpsites was reduced from 3,203 in 2010 to 938 in 2018.

The concept to set up waste sorting and re-use plants, as well as landfills in Belarus is under coordination. Regional facilities will include automated sorting lines for recyclable material resources, mobile complexes to process construction waste and produce materials for road and construction work, equipment to process plastics waste, electronic equipment, etc.

“The financing of the concept is under discussion with the stakeholders. Among the engaged is not only the Housing and Utilities Ministry, but also all district executive committees,” said Marina Tolstik.
