Belarus' science lauded by Russian Academy of Sciences chief

MOSCOW, 9 December (BelTA) – Belarusian science demonstrates good results and this is in many ways an example to follow for Russia, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeev said at the meeting with Belarusian journalists in Moscow on 9 December. The meeting was organized by the Belarus-Russia Union State Standing Committee, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus is an example for Russia in a number of ways, first of all, in science and technology. There are disciplines where remarkable results were achieved. I am a physicist specializing in optics, plasma research and nuclear energy and I know that as far as laser optics is concerned, Belarus is in many ways an example for Russia now. Although Russia is better resourced, Belarus is running really good innovative projects,” the researcher said.

The president of the Russian Academy of Sciences named several areas of research where collaboration of Belarusian and Russian scientists would generate the most meaningful results. According to him, this is cooperation in space research, first of all. “Talks are underway with Belarus and Roscosmos on developing a satellite equipped with devices that are being developed in Belarus. Belarusian companies specializing in radio technology and optics are in a good shape, therefore part of the equipment to be installed on this satellite is from Belarus. This is an example of a collaborative effort when the equipment of the satellite is made in Belarus, but the launch is done by Russia,” Alexander Sergeev said.

He also mentioned Belarus' solutions in electric transport. In his view, the parties could cooperate in this field, too: they could use Belarusian solutions in electric engines and Russia's high-capacity batteries and charging stations. “This is a promising project,” the scientist said.

“We have always known that Belarus has made substantial progress in agricultural sciences and the agricultural sector. We are interested in new plant varieties and new animal species as well as in veterinary science,” he said.

Artificial intelligence is another avenue of cooperation. “We know that Belarus is famous for its programmers who are on the bleeding edge of software development. Their software sells well abroad. This area also offers many cooperation opportunities,” he said.
