Belarus' National Library to host international congress on 21-22 October

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – The 7th international congress “Library as Cultural Phenomenon” will take place in the National Library of Belarus on 21-22 October. The event will celebrate country studies and local history as mainstream in preserving historical and cultural heritage of countries and nations, BelTA learned from the organizers.

This year the congress events will be held both in the National Library of Belarus and online. The congress will be attended by specialists from libraries, museums, archives, research organizations, educational institutions, folk art centers, amateur local historians, developers and manufacturers of information products, representatives of public and cultural organizations of Belarusians in foreign countries.

An exhibition of publishing products will open on the first day of the congress. The program will also include presentations, seminars, workshops and round tables. The main topics for discussion will be the history and culture of countries, regions, localities as an area of modern research, as well as the organization of local history of libraries, its regulatory and methodological support. Participants will discuss thematic bibliographic resources and projects, electronic information sources on local history and country studies.

The congress will officially open at the conference hall in the National Library at 10.00 on 21 October. On the same day at 17.00 there will be a presentation of the online encyclopedia Belarus in Persons and Events, which contains factual information about famous people who have made a significant contribution to the scientific, cultural and spiritual heritage of Belarus, the most important events in various spheres of life of the country, as well as memorials, monuments of history, culture and nature.

The event is organized by the Culture Ministry and the National Library of Belarus.
