Belarus names its Capital of Culture 2023

MINSK, 23 March (BelTA) – The Culture Ministry chose Belarus' Capital of Culture 2023 at the meeting of its collegium on 23 March, BelTA learned from the press service of the Culture Ministry.

The meeting was held at the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theater.

Six cities and town claimed the title of Belarus' next Capital of Culture: Baranovichi of Brest Oblast, Mozyr of Gomel Oblast, Svisloch and Shchuchin of Grodno Oblast, Slutsk of Minsk Oblast, Belynichi of Mogilev Oblast. The towns made presentations and even staged performances. Members of the collegium of the ministry chose Slutsk as Belarus' Capital of Culture 2023,” the press service noted.

During the voting process, the collegium assessed the applicants' experience in holding cultural events, availability of the necessary infrastructure, tangible and intangible historical and cultural heritage, the preservation of traditions, customs, festivals of folk art, new cultural projects.

The national campaign Belarus' Capital of Culture has been held since 2010. Its purpose is to popularize national culture, to showcase various cities and regions and display their tourist potential. Orsha is Belarus' Capital of Culture this year.
