Belarus MFA, Lithuania diplomat discuss reburial ceremony for 1863 uprising participants in Vilnius

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) - Lithuania's Ambassador to Belarus Andrius Pulokas was invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus on 18 November, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Lithuanian ambassador was handed over the findings of the examination with regard to the possible burial place of Viktor Kalinovsky, the brother of Kastus Kalinovsky.

On its official Facebook page, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs gave details of its cooperation with Lithuania on the identification of the remains of Kastus Kalinovsky found in Vilnius. “We do not expect recognition or apology as big as was the criticism from different sides. We just want to tell about the work carried out by different Belarusian institutions,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained. In July 2019 the Investigative Committee of Belarus together with the State Committee of Forensic Examinations exhumed the possible grave of Viktor Kalinovsky in Svisloch.

“Today's transfer will allow comparing the results of the DNA examinations from Belarus and Lithuania for the full identification of possible remains of Kastus Kalinovsky in Vilnius. We cannot guarantee that the transferred remains belong to Viktor Kalinovsky, but we should go down this road science-wise. This is our contribution. We see it as our duty to work together with our Lithuanian colleagues to establish the truth. Any, even the smallest lead, can be the key one,” the ministry said.

Belarus thanked Lithuania for the official invitation to attend an official ceremony to rebury the remains of the participants of the 1863 uprising due in Vilnius on 22 November. “We are happy to accept the invitation. The delegation of our country will be headed by Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko,” the ministry said.
