MINSK, 9 May (BelTA) – Belarus' KGB has stopped attempts to commit terrorist attacks ahead of 9 May, BelTA learned from Chairman of the State Security Committee (KGB) of Belarus Ivan Tertel.

Ivan Tertel said there are plans to release information about the relevant facts on 10 May. “According to our estimates, these events were connected with 9 May. An attempt to stir up the situation. The head of state is aware of these details. We've apprehended a certain number of individuals, who have been getting ready to carry out terrorist attacks. And we know that special services are behind it. I don't want to disclose everything today. We will try to say everything tomorrow,” he said.

“These were attempts at organizing terrorist attacks in our territory. And we believe they were timed specifically to Victory Day,” the KGB chief stressed.

Ivan Tertel mentioned the importance of vigilance of citizens. The work of any special service cannot be as effective if citizens do not stay vigilant. “Tomorrow in the announced story we will demonstrate how attempts are being made to involve young Belarusians, our university students in the organization of terrorist attacks. Sometimes people fail to understand that their actions border on law violations. But essentially they have gone nearly as far as hell,” the KGB chief said.

“The situation in the world at present is extremely troublesome. We expect the situation around our country to escalate. We are working upon the president's instruction to prevent anything that may disrupt the calmness of our citizens. Everything necessary for it is being done,” the KGB chief assured.

The work proceeds in association with the Internal Affairs Ministry and the State Border Committee of Belarus among other agencies. Work at the state border has been stepped up. It is a preventive measure.
