Belarus, Italy to bolster ties in ICT, medicine, energy

MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) - Belarus and Italy will step up scientific and innovative cooperation in ICT, medicine, energy, new materials, including within the framework of the EU Research and Innovation Program Horizon 2020. Such an agreement was reached by Chairman of Belarus' State Science and Technology Committee Aleksandr Shumilin and Italy's Minister of Education, University and Research Lorenzo Fioramonti during a meeting on 13 December, BelTA learned from the press service of the State Science and Technology Committee.

Belarusian scientists and specialists, together with partners from Italy, are participating in 11 projects of the EU's Horizon 2020 with a total budget of more than €1.160 million. According to Aleksandr Shumilin, in close cooperation with the Italian side, Belarus will be able to expand its participation in the EU's programs Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe. “We are interested in the Italian experience and best practices of participation in the European Union's research and innovation programs," he said.

During the meeting, the parties examined the work of the joint science and technology commission and considered launching a contest of joint fundamental and applied projects in science, technology and innovations. Prospects for setting up of manufactures of high-tech goods and services and tapping third-country markets were also on the agenda.

The legal framework of Belarusian-Italian relations includes 13 international treaties and international legal documents. In September 2019, Italy ratified an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in science and technology. It came into force on 26 November 2019.
