MINSK, 5 June (BelTA) – Belarus' experience, especially in the IT sector, is important for international cooperation in intellectual property protection, WIPO Director General Francis Gurry said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.
“We discussed in detail the cooperation areas we are set to work on in the long term. We spoke about nanotechnologies that can improve living conditions. Intellectual property is of great importance in facing and winning the competition. Competition in high technologies is strong. We can see tension in the use of these technologies. I think we cannot do without international cooperation here. Belarus agrees on this as well,” Francis Gurry said.
As for patenting international inventions, the WIPO head said that since 2015 the organization has been receiving applications that concern artificial intelligence, and the number of such applications increases every year. “Today there are gaps in what concerns big data. There are many issues that need to be discussed at the international level. We are interested in the experience of the HTP and of Belarus in general,” Francis Gurry added.
He also listed the main modern trends based on information technologies: robotics, blockchain, artificial intelligence. “Here, Belarus is in a very good position worldwide,” the head of WIPO said.
Francis Gurry is on visit to Belarus on 3-5 June. The program of the visit includes meetings with officials and a speech at the opening of the regional seminar on the use of intellectual property rights.
WIPO is an international organization that coordinates international cooperation in intellectual property. The organization is headquartered in Geneva. WIPO unites 192 member states. WIPO's main objectives are to promote intellectual property rights through cooperation, perform administrative functions as part of international agreements on intellectual property.
WIPO provides significant assistance to Belarus in the development of the national system of intellectual property. The cooperation is focused on the improvement of Belarus' legislation in compliance with international standards, development of the national infrastructure, application of new information technologies, personnel training.
